A comprehensive guide to Huaqing Palace, a legendary hot spring resort palace with over 3,000 years of history.
Huaqing Palace is located at the foot of the Li Mountain in Lintong District, Xi'an. With a history spanning more than 3,000 years, it has been a royal hot spring resort since the Zhou Dynasty. The most famous association is with the love story of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and his consort Yang Guifei, whose passionate romance unfolded within these palace walls.
The complex features beautiful gardens, ancient architecture, natural hot springs, and the stunning outdoor performance "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow" (长恨歌). The palace is also home to the Huaqing Pool, where Yang Guifei famously bathed, and the Nine-Dragon Lake, a beautiful water feature that serves as the backdrop for the evening performance.
📢 Special Tips
① "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" Live Performance: The absolute pinnacle of Huaqing Palace — the entire Mount Li serves as the backdrop, with water screens, fire effects, and dramatic lighting. Many visitors call this the most immersive live show they've ever seen. For full details and ticket info, see the Song of Everlasting Sorrow.
② Huaqing Yutang Hot Spring Experience: Curious about the verse "spring water smooth washing her fair skin"? The adjacent Baoji Pool lets you soak in real Tang-style hot springs (see photos ④–⑥ on the right):
